Although I am a serious amateur photographer with 3 Canon d-SLR cameras and 7 nice Canon lenses, I can appreciate the amount of features that are packed into this very affordable camera (which, at the time of this review writing, is being heavily discounted by Amazon). From looking at Fujifilm's line of 'J Series' point-and-shoot cameras, it appears that this 'J Series' is aimed at value-packed simplicity. While the photos that you take using this camera will not always be perfect, they tend to be quite foolproof, which makes this camera an excellent choice for a first-time photographer or even as a gift for a child or teenager. Someone who is college-age or older may potentially become very interested in digital photography and then quickly outgrow this camera and want something better. But for younger children, or for someone looking for a good basic and very affordable point-and-shoot camera, this is a pretty good choice. I still remember my first inexpensive and very-easy-to-use Kodak Instamatic film camera that my father bought me when I was in grade school, which started me down the road to being infected with a rather incurable shutterbug disease :-)
On the enclosed printed 'User Guide 1' for this camera, it says: "For more information, see the supplied Owner's Manual (CD) or visit fujifilm-web-site", but this J40 model is not listed on their 'J Series' pages and, in fact, the J40 model is nowhere to be found on their Web site. But there is an online Owner's Manual for the model series of "J27/J28/J29/J30/J32/J37/J38". The supplied CD has an Owner's Manual PDF file that lists the model series as "J27/J28/J29/J30/J32/J37/J38/J40". Both Owner's Manual versions mention: "Finepix J37 has a 3.0-inch monitor and the others each have a 2.7 inch monitor." Note that the Owner's Manual only mentions the J37 even though it lists the J40 model. So since this J40 also has a 3.0-inch monitor, I strongly suspect that the J37 and J40 models are identical, i.e. based on the J38 model, but outfitted with a better 3.0-inch LCD monitor.

***** This camera is packed with all of the shooting modes and scene modes that you would expect from far more expensive point-and-shoot cameras that cost 3 to 5 times more than what this camera currently costs. Coming from the high expectations of mainly using high-end "prosumer-level" d-SLRs for many years now, I was still pleasantly surprised by this camera's abilities when used with the 'Macro', 'Night', and 'Night Portrait' modes. The automatic 'Face Detection' was not always perfect, but in most conditions, it recognized faces in the shot and locked onto them.
***** The supplied CD also comes with 'FinePixViewer' software that you can install to provide simple abilities to download, save, and organize your photos, along with basic photo editing/cropping/printing functions. From the CD, you can also install a USB driver for connecting the camera to the USB port on your computer, and install Windows Media Player and DirectX for playing back movies on your computer. While this may be useful for the most basic novice computer and digital photography users, I would recommend that other than downloading the Owner's Manual PDF from the CD, you should not install the other software unless you have no better options. The included 'FinePixViewer' software is fine if you have no other photo viewing/editing software on your computer. For downloading photos from the camera's memory card, personally, for both my d-SLR and point-and-shoot cameras, I always preferred to use a separate card reader instead of connecting the camera to my computer. Instead of using this camera as a "card reader" by connecting the camera to your computer using the supplied USB cable, I would very highly recommend the Transcend P8 15-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader TS-RDP8K (Black); it is a very fast, very inexpensive, very small card reader... and it comes in your choice of four different colors :-)

**** In some of the toughest tests for a basic digital camera like this, I turned off the flash and tried photographing dark or even very dark night scenes in Auto-ISO, ISO 1600, and ISO 3200 settings. Auto-ISO kept the ISO at 800 for night shots, and the results were quite acceptable (again, taking into account the price bracket for this camera). ISO 1600, and especially ISO 3200, had substantial sensor noise. But, on a practical basis, ISO noise like this may not be that apparent for the novice photographer for whom this camera is targeted at. Once you start learning about digital camera technologies and you become more aware of what high-ISO noise is (or what problems like pincushion distortion and chromatic aberration are), you tend to notice that more in photos when you see it. But to novice photographers, moderate amounts of high-ISO noise may not always be noticed by them. Besides, high-ISO noise is very common for these small digital cameras anyway.

*** One (small) complaint that I have for this camera is that pressing the zoom button only gives you five distinct zoom levels, instead of giving you a continuous zoom as you press down a button, which is how many point-and-shoot cameras operate. I can only surmise that this simplified 5-level zoom function was implemented to keep the cost down? On the LCD monitor, you can slowly zoom into photos with a nice gradual zoom. But in taking photos, the camera only allows 5 incremental zoom levels. This may not always be a problem however, depending upon your shooting situation. In many situations, if the zoom level that you want is in between one zoom and another, you may be able to get the exact framing and composition that you want by simply moving the camera or moving yourself forward or backward some before taking the photo.
Fuzzy Wuzzy's Conclusion:
This is a nice value-packed camera with its current pricing within the sub-$100 price bracket. While it is a pretty crowded playing field for digital point-and-shoot cameras priced below $100, not that many of them currently offer 12 megapixels and a 3.0-inch LCD monitor. I give this camera a 5-star rating because of all of the features that it has. However, be aware that in this price bracket, you can get a substantially better camera by spending $30 or $50 more. That contrasts with high-end digital SLR cameras where you may have to spend at least $400 or $800 more to get a substantially better SLR camera.

Perfect Portraits

Make a Movie

Good in low-light
Photos taken in low light are the ones that are most likely to produce disappointing results. Limited flash range and direct light can mean the foreground is harshly lit and the background lost all together. If the flash isn't used at all, the image can suffer from digital interference called 'noise' as the sensor struggles to pick up all of the detail in the scene. Fujifilm has put 70 years of experience in imaging into fine-tuning the light sensitivity and flash systems of its cameras and you perhaps wouldn't normally expect a camera placed at such an affordable price point, to house such technology ? but we can assure you - it does.
Scene it?
With 17 special scene modes, the J40 is ready to shoot everything and anything, from "Sunsets" to "Flowers." Have fun trying out each scene position and the camera automatically selects the appropriate shutter speed, exposure and white balance to ensure that you get great images with the least amount of effort.
