I bought this film because I had heard on numerous online forums that it is a good E6 substitute for Kodachrome. Well, let's just say that it does not come close. Both Ektachrome E100G and EPN come MUCH closer to Kodachrome than ANYTHING by Fuji. Astia reminds me MUCH more of a C41 film like Portra. And, in many ways, this is its strength. The relatively low contrast and saturation make this film ideal for scanning. This allows you to get shadow detail that other chrome might miss. And it gives you a good starting point for editing: it is MUCH easier to get the end result you want by adding saturtion and contrast than it is to try to take away excessive saturation and contrast. And unlike C41 film (which behaves similarly in MANY ways, what you see is what you get in terms of color. Also, this film is about as grain-free as you can get.
Just one catch. It is not the easiest film in the world to get. I noticed that it is only available here as a pro pack - not good if you just want to try a roll or two. Also, if you don't live in a major metropolitan area, chances are you can't just pick it up at your local photo store. It might take a little effort to get it. But it is DEFINITELY worth trying if you are looking for the best film to scan.
